La norme CEI 61131-3 décrit 5 langages normalisés de programmation des automates :

• Le langage LADDER (LD)
• Le langage en bloc fonction (FBD)
• Le langage Instruction List (IL)
• Le langage structuré "Stuctured Text" (ST)
• Le langage proche du Grafcet le "Sequentiel Function Chart" (SFC)
